I like to do this at the end of every year and this year will not be different. 2020 has been an interesting year for the world. Yet, there were lessons from 2020 that we need to ponder on. I had seen a video post sometime on Instagram that said, “we have always had the problems that we saw in the world this year. 2020 was the year that everything that could go wrong went wrong”. And there is truth to this. There has always been sickness in the world (including contagious ones) and some of them, we still do not have treatments for. There has always been protests in different countries, and there has always been corruption in the world. However, 2020 brought all of these issues together and then some, and that exposed the world for what it truly is. (fill in the gap).
All of that being said, 2020 was not all bad. I’m happy that even on social media, we have people saying that the year was not all bad and recording accomplishments even this year. And there will still be more to celebrate even on the last day of the year.
So, here are some of the lessons from 2020 that I think will be helpful to you as well.
Your mindset is important.
I have established that this year was different. No lies, there were challenges encountered and situations that could not be explained. Many people suffered loss of friends, families, businesses, a school year and properties. Yet, out of this group of persons, some came out on top with success that they enjoyed in spite of the loss. Some others did not experience any form loss, but they made no progress in the year. I believe this is on the mindset that you have and work with. There are different types of mindset and the one you operate in can either break or make you. I’ll share more on this soon.
The reason why some people were securing the bag and getting their business right even in a period that was tagged as difficult is the mindset that they work with. If you work with a negative mindset that magnifies the difficulty that is experienced, then that is all you see. But if you operate with a positive one that believes that you can and will achieve what you want to, then you are on the right path of achieving. Maintaining the right mindset at all times was very crucial for me in 2020
Though it was not normal, there were blessings enjoyed.
A lot of people will say 2020 was the worst year ever and there are a few that will see it was the best year. A lot of people started businesses this year, some got jobs, some others started their families. So yes, it was a challenging year, but even in the midst of the challenges, there are so many blessings within. Don’t be blinded by the difficulties that were obvious. If you take a few minutes to reflect on the positives in the year, then you will realise that there were blessings enjoyed this year. I had a series of intentional gratitude on IGTV and it was mainly me reflecting on things to be grateful for in the year.
If you still think you did not enjoy blessings this year, think of the fact that you still have life. In spite of all the challenges of the year, you survived, and that is awesome. One of my lessons from 2020 was that people still get blessed even in challenging periods.
Whatever you want to do, do while you can.
2020 was the year that taught us the importance of life and time. People that were alive one minute were no more the next. These people had dreams, goals and vision that they wanted to pursue. They had awesome ideas that they planned to execute. Some even had 10 years plan. But what you do with the time that you have matters and is the most important. Stop waiting for the perfect time to start something. There is never going to be a perfect time. You have to start the process for yourself and let the perfection meet you on the journey.
So, those awesome and mind-blowing ideas that you want to work on in 5 years, you can start working on them now. Now is what we are certain we have, so use it wisely. It is often said that the grave is the richest place on earth because people die with so many ideas and wealth. It does not have to be same for you. Be intentional about all your gifts and talents on earth.
After God, your relationship with yourself is next.
The most important relationship that every human should have is one with God. After God, the next most important relationship is with yourself. For almost half of the year, the world was in isolation and all we had as physical human contact was with ourselves and family. But even with family, majority of the time you, spent alone. The only person that you are with all the time is yourself. But we do not see this because we distract our relationship with ourselves with the ones we have with others. So, rather than spending time with yourself, you are spending more time with others.
Building a relationship with yourself is very important. You need to know what you love and what you hate, learn how to love yourself and what makes you happy. Having a relationship with yourself is you getting to know yourself intimately and in every way possible. this relationship is very important.
It’s a few days to the end of the year, so, take a few minutes of the day to reflect on the lessons you learnt this year. It sets you up for a greater 2021, and stops you from repeating those classes.
